Asperger's

Asperger’s

What does Asperger’s mean to you?  What emotion (if any) does it evoke?  I would venture to guess….most people who hear that word have no emotion attached to it.  It evokes a response such as “yeah…ok…I have no idea what that means” and most people just leave it at that and move on with their day.  I, on the other hand, am deeply affected by Asperger’s.  I live with it everyday.  I have a daughter with Asperger’s.  And, there is no cure.  She will live with it the rest of her life.  I can’t take her to the hospital and do surgery to take it out.  I can’t take her to a clinic and give her radiation or chemotherapy to eradicate the “bad cells” making her “sick”.  She has NO chance for cure.  SO, the only thing we can do is give her tools to help her manage it.  We can help her find coping mechanisms to be a successful member of society.  All of this takes patience, true grit, perseverance, and compassion.

Asperger’s characteristics are as follows:
·      Insistence on sameness/fairness: easily overwhelmed by minimal changes in routines, sensitive to environmental
stressors, preference for rituals.
·      Impairment in social interactions: difficulty understanding the “rules” of interaction, poor comprehension of
jokes and metaphor, pedantic speaking style.
·      Restricted range of social competence: preoccupation with singular topics, asking repetitive questions, obsessively collecting items.
·      Inattention: poor organizational skills, easily distracted, focused on irrelevant stimuli, difficulty learning in group
contexts.
·      Poor motor coordination: slow clerical speed, clumsy gait, unsuccessful in games involving motor skills.
·      Academic difficulties: restricted problem solving skills, literal thinking, and deficiencies with abstract reasoning.  Easily overwhelmed by homework assignments, tests, etc.
·      Emotional vulnerability: low self-esteem, easily overwhelmed, poor coping with stressors, self-critical.  High anxiety, easily overwhelmed and tipped to a fight or flight response.  Meltdowns/tantrums are a common occurrence, even in older kids.
·      Behavior serves a function, is related to context, and is a form of             communication.
·      Maturity is delayed.  Most Asperger’s are about 3 years behind typical maturity levels.

Next question you might ask:  Why do you want to change someone with Asperger’s.  My answer is why not do your best to help someone with a disability so they can have the best chance possible for a life of independence?  I am not proposing changing them (as I said before there is no cure), I am proposing giving them tools to assimilate into society to their best potential. Why do we do surgery on a child with a heart problem (for example my son).  Why do we cure someone with Cancer?  Why do I work so hard to give Nicolas skills such as reading, riding a bike, and counting money?  Why don’t we accept things the way they are?  Because we want the best for our children.  I see Maggie struggle on a daily basis.  She has a very difficult time getting along with others and understanding her behaviors and how they affect others.  She struggles with close friendships.  She struggles being in a room with a lot of noise.  She has told me that hearing me whistle sounds shrill and piercing, that it feels almost painful.  She insists on fairness; which causes conflict with others.  She struggles with doing tasks that seem overwhelming.  She doesn’t read social cues well and therefore gets bullied on a regular basis.  She spends 95% of her weekend evenings in her room alone.  NOT normal for a teenager.  She doesn’t like it.  She cries because she sees her friends on Facebook out and about doing social things…and she is never invited.  She doesn’t know how to initiate friendships.  She is shy and insecure.  She is awkward and unaware of how she appears to others.  She is immature.  She has meltdowns and tantrums on a regular basis at home, causing conflict and tension.  In turn, it erodes her self-esteem.  What kind of life is this?  It’s lonely and it is unhappy.  I want to help her figure out how to cope with all of this in a healthy way.  I want her to understand herself and learn how to recognize when she is feeling overwhelmed and anxious and then have a repertoire of tools to fall back on to overcome that anxiety so she can “fit in” to our social norms as best as she POSSIBLY can.  I don’t think that is expecting too much for her.  In fact, I think it is being a responsible parent who is doing what a parent should do.  Our job as parents is to prepare our children to be independent adults who are capable of holding a job, having healthy relationships, and managing their affairs (and I don’t mean relational affairs!)

My Story

My Story

Many of my friends have been asking….what happened?  Maggie looks so normal.  Some have even added, have you lost your mind?  All teenagers are difficult and all children go through what you are dealing with.  Teenagers are lazy, teenagers are emotional, teenagers are crazy!  Don’t you think you are expecting too much from her?  Can’t you accept her the way she  is and stop expecting her to be what you want her to be?  OK, OK….Ok….I am going to get this down in print for the first time ever.  Not that anyone could ever appreciate what we have lived over the years.  It’s a doozy of a story.

First, people have always told me I should write a book about my family and my experiences but I have never been able to sit long enough to get the words out (can you say ADHD?) and I am NOT a clever writer like some people I know (Melissa, Britty!-jealous!!).  I am just a tell-it-like-it-is kinda gal!  SO, in the interest of just getting it down….I will do my best to write eloquently.  Just like I have done my best (but most certainly not perfectly) with raising my children…I will most assuredly not be able to write perfectly either.  However, what IS perfect?

I am going to go out on a limb here….I don’t have the kind of faith that two of my beautiful friends , Julie & Melissa, have.  MY family didn’t raise me attending church every weekend (though, don’t get me wrong…I did attend and when I did, I loved it!).  In fact (and I know I am digressing a bit here but there IS a point)…when I lived in Europe my mother was so turned off by the catholic churches and their ostentatiousness and the money the poor people were guilted into giving to the church “so Bishops and Popes could live high on the hog”….that she turned away from God and became an Atheist.  I have had MANY trials in my life and turning it over to God would have certainly helped me through those times.  I have always looked at deeply faithful people (the ones like Melissa and Julie) who have such deep and beautiful faith and love that pours out of every pore-- and wished I had what they have.  I attend church.  I sing in the choir (AND I LOVE IT!).  I believe in the power of prayer (I read studies in Nursing school about it).  I believe in Godly moments.  I see others going through tough times handling things with such grace because of their faith…But something tugs me away from having COMPLETE faith that God is helping me through tough times (I have had my share!) or helping me make decisions.  It’s kinda like how can you believe in God….if there is no Santa Claus, tooth fairy, or Easter Bunny?  But I see God in so many things—the sunset, the view from the top of a mountain, the crystal white snow in the Colorado Mountains, etc (you get it).  AND I see Him in so MANY of my friends.  Lately I have become involved in a special needs mom’s group (MacGyver moms) and I have never felt so much love and support EVER.  The lessons Kirk is giving us on a monthly basis have really touched me deeply.  I wish I had had this group all my motherhood.  I think by now I would have been a more evolved Christian.  I love the teachings of the Bible, I love listening to sermons, but in no way could I ever quote ONE scripture.  Heck, I don’t even know one book from the other.  I don’t even know how Jona got into the whale!  I have never read the bible…because I have a reading and comprehension disability.  It’s difficult for me to read a baby book!  J  Anyway….over the years I have wanted that faith and that connection to God.  This week I sent my daughter off to the wilderness.  The only thing helping me was seeing God holding her in His arms because I can’t.  The only thing letting me see the light was seeing her walking along side angels like my beautiful friend Julie told me.  The only thing getting me through those GUT wrenching visuals of what she might be doing or thinking…is that there IS a God telling her that he loves her because I can’t.  I miss her more than I thought I would.  I started crying my eyes out during a double baptism this weekend because Steve said to the congregation….those children aren’t the parents’ children…they are children of God.  OH GOD….I pray you are taking care of your child and helping her get through this.  Please tell her I love her!!!!

I wish I could leave this on a funny note like Melissa….but again…I wasn’t given the gift of writing.  I have OTHER incredible gifts.  And, my close friends know what they are!

Love,
Laura

Dear Maggie

Dear Maggie,

We hope you can someday understand how much thought and preparation went into this decision to allow you to go on this journey into the wilderness BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU.  This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for you to blossom into the beautiful young lady we know is in there….you just need some extra fertilizer and being with this group is going to do that for you!  We just know it!  I (mommie) found this prayer for you, Mags:  Be the gardener of my soul.  “Spirit of the living God, be the gardener of my soul.  For so long I have been waiting, silent, and still---experiencing a winter of the soul.  But now, in the strong name of Jesus Christ, I dare ask:  Clear away the dead growth of the past, Break up the hard clods of custom and routine, Stir in the rich compost of vision and challenge, Bury deep in my soul the implanted Word, Cultivate and water and tend my heart, Until new life buds and opens and flowers.  Amen”.  Allow new growth Maggie.  Keep it in your heart and mind that we are very proud of you.  We are so blessed to have the resources to be able to give you this incredible experience.  It is not going to be easy.  You will be walking in the wilderness….but you will not be alone.  We will be thinking of you every day!  Your church family will be thinking of you everyday!  Close your eyes every night and you will see us smiling at you and holding you and kissing you on your forehead.  We love you so much!  Remember:  You is kind. You is smart. You is important.  You are going to be walking on Holy Ground on this journey, believe me- angels are with you.  Allow God to do His work!  You might not understand why you are there at first….you might be really angry, sad, and confused.  But this is all part of the plan.  You need to figure things out on your own and get to the point when you have your own strength and wisdom to rely on, to learn to manage yourself.  Keep your sense of humor!  You have a wonderful ability to see funny things.  Don’t let darkness cloud that sense of humor!  Don’t let that anxiety paralyze you!  Take on challenges head on and come out happy on the other side.  It feels so good to feel happy and feel good about accomplishments.  When you are faced with a challenge that you think you cannot do….remember the dive saying “heave and believe!”  You finally did that inward and you didn’t eat it!  AND, you cried because you were SO happy!  We hope you cry often on this journey because you are so happy that you did something that you thought was scary or impossible.  I (mommie) have been listening to Michael Buble (I wish I could get that cute little thing above the e) a lot lately because, yes….I know this is a surprise to you…BUT, I LOVE him!  SO, there is a song he sings that I love….and it reminds me of you and this journey.  Here are the best words of the song:  (I wish I could sing it for you right now …and this is the reason I played it for you in the car that day…I hope you can hear me singing..)
“You are not alone, I'm always there with you, And we'll get lost together.  Until the light comes pouring through.  It's when you feel like you're done. And the darkness has won.  Babe, you're not lost.  When your world's crashing down.  And you can't bear the cross.  I said, babe, you're not lost.  Life can show no mercy.  It can tear your soul apart.  It can make you feel like you've gone crazy but you're not.  Things have seemed to change
There's one thing that's still the same.  In my heart you have remained.  And we can fly fly fly away..”
So, Mags!  We love you!  We love you SO much we have not given up on you.  We believe in your heart (to coin a phrase from a wise boy we both know)!  We believe this is going to make a big difference in your lifetime happiness and ability to be a successful person in life.  It is intended to stretch you….it is intended to make you think…it is intended to help you do the work you need to do on yourself….to be more aware of you and how you impact others.  How you impact yourself and how you impact your friends and family.  We know one thing is for certain and that is: you will come out of there more appreciative of your life, family, friends and the home you live in.  We hope you will also appreciate how lucky you are in so many ways.  You have so many wonderful qualities-- we hope you allow this journey to help you develop them.  We hope you learn to accept things you cannot change.  We hope you learn to ignore things that are insignificant (like others singing, whistling, or talking when you don’t want them to!  Jes’ sayin’!)  We hope you learn that sharing things (like books) and feelings with others is one of the most incredible feelings you will ever have.  Sharing IS caring, and solid relationships with friends and family are hard work and require a lot of sharing (we don’t mean ONLY feelings, we mean things, too). And, a relationship with a sibling is the best thing you can ever have, if you learn to enjoy it and cultivate it!  All relationships are very valuable.  AND, relationships will get you through difficult times, but it is up to you to do YOUR part!  These are some struggles we see you have and reasons we felt this program was what you need:
*Anxiety of new experiences. You tend to be rigid and inflexible when you are required to get out of your comfort zone. And most things are out of your comfort zone.
*Anxiety & awkward behavior in social situations. You are unable to recognize and act upon subtleties in the typical social environment. You choose isolation and social withdrawal due to your discomfort.
*Escalation & overreaction to minor events. You are overwhelmed by ordinary tasks and unable to initiate the first step and frequently just shut down. Your overreaction often leads to frustration and impulsive anger.  (example: tutoring with dad)
*Lack of motivation & initiative to reach your potential and achieve goals. You can be apathetic and you often unreasonably procrastinate. You choose not to take total responsibility for tasks. (example: learning a “new” dive, doing your chores)
*Obsessing about negative emotions. You tend to down play your successes and achievements. You choose not to participate in activities because you pre-determine a negative outcome. You automatically assume negative feelings from others toward yourself.
*Intense feelings of inadequacy & insecurity. Your low self-esteem does not allow you to visualize your true potential and acknowledge your successes.

We have tremendous hope that attending this program will help you overcome these life limiting behaviors and enable you to learn to deal with them in a more constructive manner. We sincerely wish that you will desire to become comfortable with all the new life opportunities before you.  During your time at the program we hope you are serious about this opportunity and work hard to achieve positive benefits for the rest for your life. We too will be doing our assigned work. You need to know that we love you unconditionally. No matter what choices you make in life you will always have our love and support. Our sincere wish for you is to have a self-fulfilling life of independence. We are not interested in making major changes to who you are but to have you learn to adjust some behaviors and habits and bring contentment and fulfillment to your life in the future.

Never give up on yourself.  We have not given up on YOU!  Know that we love you always.
All our love and smiles,

Mom & Dad

Dumb men....especially when they are learning disabled! ARGH!

OMG....I am exhausted from taking care of 4 challenged people.  A husband, an almost 16 yr old autistic girl, a mentally retarded 14 year old boy, and an 11 year old girl who has ADHD!  Oh....man.....today I wanted to give up...but I know I can't....and I don't really know what keeps me going.......it would be so nice to just stop doing everything for everyone!  Sustaining this kind of effort is really exhausting, even though I have nurses for Nicolas.

Where to begin....Maggie...ok....Maggie.  She is THE most difficult "normal"ish child I could have ever been given.  Every step of the day is exhausting for me.  She is incapable of managing her own responsibilities.....she texts me for stupid questions she could figure out, she texts me to record a show that she is perfectly capable of recording when she gets home...she can't brush her own hair and part it so it looks nice, she wears the SAME old BORING clothes over and over again.....and rarely puts on clothes that are cute.  She has NO sense of style and looks like an idiot almost every day...even at church!  It is really disappointing to me to have a daughter who has no idea how to look adorable and bouncy!  ARGH!  The more you push her, the more she pushes back, she doesn't work hard in school, she hates going to her activities, she gave up piano and show choir, she DOES NOTHING with her life!......I am SO done!  SO, last weekend we went to Las Vegas and had a great time without the kids.....at least I did.  (apparently Bill didn't have as much fun as I did because he told me today that we never have fun together and connect---Oh---want to KILL him!  Mr. Exaggeration!!!!!).  SO, we had decided (at least that's what I understood....but....want to KILL Bill....apparently we DID NOT!) to look into options for Maggie to go away---to a program over the summer.  I did....I looked into one that was $30,000 for 80 days.  WHICH, Bill thought was a bit too much (because he is so GD shortsighted that he can't grasp the forest for the trees AGAIN-  EXHAUSTING FOR ME!!  Want to KILL him!).  I am willing to concede that the $30,000 is a bit much for an 80 day program that will probably not get us where we want to for Maggie....but SHIT!  I am freeking tired of the constant work of raising 3 kids with challenges and being in a marriage with a man who can't reason or see the big picture.  He is so ignorant that he doesn't understand relationships, he wants SO much from me yet expects me to drop everything and come to him.  OH....I can't I can't I can't.......I have to leave.....forever.  WISHFUL thinking...

So, instead of leaving....I want to find a good place for Maggie.....a good place that she will be HAPPY, make friends, have relationships, learn resiliency, self reliance, independence, and fortitude!  I want those things for Maggie because I don't want her to live a life of sadness and loneliness and lacking success.  I want to provide the tools she needs to have a better chance at success than I think she has at this point.....and I think I am going to have to send her somewhere with Bill Kicking and screaming because I can't make him see the SOUND and logical reasons for doing it (he is pretty much, well, stupid!).  To me....it is an investment in her future and if I don't do it now....she will REALLY struggle.  SO, I started looking into some places (NO harm in that, right?  Well according to Bill it is, because he wants the bunnies to be hopping down the path while we sit intimately next to each other and search the web for places!  GAG!).... most in AZ.  She has been turned down from one because they don't think they can handle Maggie's issues.  I spoke to another today at length and that seems like a good option.....so I filled out the application (friggin took me all morning!).  Copper Canyon Academy.  Full on staff to support her emotionally and work on her challenges.  I would SO love to do it.  The other place I have sent off for information to is Orme school.  I have yet to hear from them.

Now....Nicolas.  Tonight....exhausting.  No help for Nicolas so I had to do all his chores with him, do his homework, and make sure he did what he needs to do--bath, feed, brush teeth, to bed.  He doesn't do those things alone...so, in between Lexi's homework, getting dinner, cleaning up from dinner, and getting Lexi on her way to getting a bath....I had to bathe Nicolas.  He is NOT independent.  There is no way anyone with typical kids can understand the exhaustion of having a mentally retarded kid...he is almost 14 and I am still doing his bath.  My sister has twins and I know how busy they are....but- WOULD DO THAT IN A HEART BEAT!  HELLLLLLOOOOOOO!  CAN YOU SAY END IN SIGHT????  I KNOW I could!  I don't know when the end is for him except the horrid day he dies.....but, nobody 'gets' that....NOT even people going through chemotherapy!  I would GIVE ANYTHING for a chemotherapy to "cure" my autistic kid and my son.  SO they have the hope of a healthy and "normal" life.

Now, Lexi.....I wanted to rip her head off.  She was so difficult (well, she is difficult a lot!).  She wouldn't do her homework.....because she was "SOOOO, hungry!" WHAH, WHAH!  So she practiced piano until I served her....and then she piddled through dinner as if she had eaten a full meal 5 min ago!  ARGH!!!  SO, dinner (up and down, not pulled into the table, talking about things that make no sense or have no interest to ANYONE!)....then bath, then 1 1/2 hours of homework.

NOW, it is 10 pm.  Maggie is finished with homework, Lexi is finally finished, and Nicolas is in bed with Maggie reading to him....Bill is on his way to bed.  Lexi needs to brush her teeth, Nicolas needs his good night kiss and Maggie needs to get to bed...lunches are not made....so that needs to be done...

Today....I oriented an older lady, Helen, to work Monday & Tuesday evenings (to help with dinner, laundry, and doing dishes) and a cleaning day.  I usually have to finish homework and then do the dishes....it was nice to have the dishes done.  BUT, orienting new people is so exhausting.  SO many questions, so many REPETITIVE questions, and so much to tell.  So many little things....I have to let go of so much and it is so hard for me to see things done in a way that doesn't seem right (to me)..but are NOT going to kill anyone if done that way.  Where does this go, who does this belong to?  How do you fold this?  Where do you keep the vacuum?  Where's the mop?  What do you use to clean the counters......YADA YADA YADA!  OMG!  I can't wait to have someone who I like.  Someone with energy, organizational skills, good personality, willingness to do most everything told to do, and NOT SPACEY!!!!  Oh LORD!  Give me smart and quick.  NOT SURE THAT IS HELEN.....we will see.

ME.....well....let's just say....there must be something wrong with me because Bill thinks there is.  SO...it must be true.  The reason he thinks there is something wrong with me is because I DID NOT DO ANYTHING productive on Friday (Well, I did run!).  AND, when he walked in the kitchen he said...."what did you do all day?"  The house looks like a disorganized mess!  HA!  Just like that story I love so  much....husband comes home to a house that is a wreck and his wife is in bed reading magazines and watching TV....the husband comes in and says "what did you do today?"....wife says...."well, let's put it this way.... I didn't do what I normally do!".  YUP....that was me on Friday and very much what I would like to do every day these days because of how exhausting it is to have 4 challenged people depending on me.......

I NEED to go to bed.....TTFN!

September 17th

Today....up early to take Maggie to Pilates.  She always struggles with waking up (takes after her mama!).  I took Nicolas, in his pjs, and left Lexi home sleeping.  She was 10 min late.  When I arrived home I knew Lexi was awake because the bag of frozen (not so frozen any more) donuts was out on the counter.  Tell tale sign!  Of course she was in front of cartoons in the bonus room.  There was much to be done, so I asked her to turn off the TV and come help me dry dishes, do dishes, feed the cats and dogs, and start some laundry.

Lost blog....did not return to finish....

Really?

Today my husband admitted that he is taking the sponges out of the sink (and throwing them out) because he doesn't like so many in the sink.  REALLY?  First of all, since when does he get to decide that?  NOW, if he made dinner and helped clean up the kitchen once in a while.....go for it!  Give your opinion.....but secondly, why does it matter in the first place!?  See what I am dealing with?

Getting Started.....

I have decided that it is time I start writing down my thoughts about my crazy life...so here goes.  This is just for me..NOBODY else.  Kinda like a diary.  Maybe someday I can publish a book.  Wouldn't that be cool?  I have such a nutty life...nutty family...difficult husband....and very challenging children...I think it is time to get the stories down on "paper".  Where to start.....I will have to get back to you on that one.  Gotta go pick up Lexi from Kumon!
